There are two resolutions to this issue and one will work to resolve the fault. First I tought that steering lock is defective, but now I am suscpecting that CAS3 is blown. The reasoning is BMW does not want you to start up and try and drive off with a locked steering wheel or steering wheel lock issue. Today there was a different problem... the steering lock would not disengage, even if the key was turned past the position where the steering lock disengages. It indicates faulty electronic steering wheel lock. The manual says not to turn off the engine and get to a dealer. Have waited couple of hours tried again and also tried different key fob but makes no difference. What we have to do at the dealer is have it dropped off inside the building by a tow truck or we do the work outside in the vehicle where it was dropped due to the steering … still no start. I turn the car off and on twice after the light appeared with no issue with the steering. BMW discontinued this part in 2007. Now engine cannot be started. Cause #1: The steering column is held against the steering lock because of torque from the steering gear. Hope in the car, foot on brake, press start/stop. The ignition lock on our 1997 318is 4-door has for some time shown some signs that it was wearing out. Sometimes when you turned the key the lock would just spin freely. Its might go off if you put the key in the ignition and wait 5 … The steering lock indicator light is different from the power steering warning light, which is an indication of an actual steering problem so don’t get them mixed up. To turn off the steering lock, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to at least the first position while turning the steering wheel in either direction. Yes, I do know of the other cases of steering lock failure but this one was wierd, and potentially a biproduct of recent vanos pump work. Handbook says move steering wheel before starting engine but makes no difference. The steering wheel lock is electrical on your BMW and when if fails the steering wheel cannot be moved. Correct. Hi all- Just a report on a wierdness. I have a 2007 BMW 530I that ,I think the battery died and keep getting steering wheel lock on the I drive. In such cases, a yellow check control warning (CC ID# 187) is shown in the instrument cluster, but no faults are stored. The ELV (Electric Steering Lock) warning is shown in the Instrument Cluster. It's a picture of a steering wheel with a padlock on it. Yesterday while driving my 2007 e92 320d a red warning light came on the dash.
